The Chemistry Your Floor Depends On

Standard epoxy is built from aromatic polymer chains. That sounds scientific, for our purposes, you only need to know one thing.

Those polymerchains absorb UV radiation.

When sunlight hits unprotected epoxy, the UV energy breaks those chemical bonds in a process called photodegradation. The result is yellowing, chalking, and surface brittleness. That’s not a surface defect. It’s structural damage at the molecular level.

Polyaspartic coatings use aliphatic chemistry. Again, very scientific, but it just means that UV bounces off it. As Engineer Fix explains in their polyaspartic coating breakdown, “the aliphatic chemistry means the material will not suffer from UV-induced yellowing or chalking, which is a common failure point for many aromatic coating systems.”

The UV energy has nothing to absorb into. The coating stays clear, hard, and stable.

It handles hot tires without softening, resists scratches from daily use, and stays flexible enough to move with concrete as temperatures change without cracking.

What Happens When the Topcoat Is Wrong or Missing

Bare epoxy without a proper topcoat fails in predictable ways, and they tend to show up within the first year.

Near a garage door that lets in afternoon light, the floor starts to amber.

It doesn’t wash off.

That’s chemical damage to the epoxy surface itself.
