What Is a Polyaspartic Topcoat?
Polyaspartic is a fast-curing resin coating used to protect concrete flooring systems.
It can be used in several ways, but in many of our flooring systems, polyaspartic is used as the clear topcoat over the epoxy and decorative finish.
That means it becomes the part of the floor you actually use every day.
Cars drive over it.
Shoes and equipment wear against it.
Sunlight hits it.
Oil, dirt, water, and other spills land on it.
A typical system looks like this:
Concrete → Epoxy Base Coat → Color or Flake Finish → Polyaspartic Topcoat
Each layer has a different job. The polyaspartic topcoat protects the finished flooring system underneath it.

Why Use a Polyaspartic Topcoat?
Better Protection From Sunlight
Standard epoxy can discolor when exposed to UV light over time.
Polyaspartic coatings are commonly used as topcoats because of their UV resistance and color stability.
That matters most around garage doors, windows, entrances, and other areas where sunlight reaches the floor.
Resistance to Scratches and Wear
The topcoat takes most of the everyday abuse.
Polyaspartic coatings have strong abrasion and scratch resistance, making them useful for garage floors, commercial floors, and other concrete surfaces that see regular traffic.
They are scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. Dragging heavy metal objects or exposing any coating to enough abuse can still damage it.
Protection From Spills and Chemicals
A polyaspartic topcoat also helps protect the flooring system from oil, automotive fluids, cleaners, and other common spills.
Instead of those materials reaching the epoxy and decorative layers below, the topcoat provides the first layer of protection.
Faster Curing
Polyaspartic coatings cure much faster than many traditional epoxy products.
That can reduce downtime during installation and help get the floor back into service sooner. The exact cure and return-to-service time depends on the product, temperature, humidity, and complete flooring system being installed.
Why We Use Epoxy and Polyaspartic Together
Customers often compare epoxy and polyaspartic as if you have to choose one or the other.
You don’t always have to.
We commonly use them for different parts of the same flooring system.
| Epoxy | Polyaspartic | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Role | Base and build coats | Protective topcoat |
| Where It Sits | Closer to the concrete | Exposed surface |
| Main Job | Builds the flooring system and holds the finish | Protects the finished floor |
| Useful Properties | Bond, build, color, and decorative systems | UV, abrasion, and chemical resistance |
| Cure Characteristics | Generally slower | Generally faster |
Using epoxy underneath and polyaspartic on top lets each material do the job it is well suited for.
A floor described simply as an “epoxy floor” can therefore still include a polyaspartic protective topcoat.
Where Are Polyaspartic Topcoats Used?
Garage Floors
A finished garage floor has to deal with vehicle traffic, dirt, automotive fluids, tools, foot traffic, and sunlight coming through the garage door.
A polyaspartic topcoat protects the epoxy and decorative finish underneath while giving the exposed surface better resistance to UV and everyday wear.
Residential Concrete Floors
Polyaspartic topcoats can also be used over compatible coating systems in residential concrete areas where the floor needs added protection.
The right system depends on where the concrete is located, how much traffic it receives, and what the floor will be exposed to.
Commercial Floors
Commercial concrete floors can see more frequent foot traffic, equipment, spills, and cleaning than a typical residential floor.
Polyaspartic coatings are often used where abrasion resistance and faster curing help reduce downtime and protect the finished flooring system.
Polyaspartic Coating FAQs
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
Not necessarily. They have different strengths.
Epoxy works well as the base and build portion of many flooring systems. Polyaspartic works well as an exposed topcoat because of its UV resistance, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and faster curing.
That is why they are commonly used together instead of choosing one material for every layer.
Can polyaspartic be applied over epoxy?
Yes. Compatible polyaspartic coatings can be installed over epoxy flooring systems.
In fact, using an epoxy system underneath a polyaspartic topcoat is a common way to combine the advantages of both materials.
Does polyaspartic turn yellow in sunlight?
Polyaspartic topcoats are commonly chosen because they provide much better UV resistance and color stability than standard epoxy exposed directly to sunlight.
How fast does polyaspartic cure?
Polyaspartic coatings are fast-curing. Some manufacturer systems can cure in only a few hours per coat, with certain products listing cure times around two hours per coat under the proper conditions.
However, return to use time will take longer.
Can polyaspartic flooring scratch?
Yes. Polyaspartic is highly scratch- and abrasion-resistant, but it is not scratch-proof.
Dragging sharp or heavy objects across the floor can damage almost any coating. Keeping grit off the floor and lifting heavy objects instead of dragging them will help protect the finish.
Can polyaspartic coatings be used outside?
Polyaspartic coatings are designed for UV exposure, and some are suitable for exterior concrete.
For outdoor coatings, we will use topcoats meant to withstand the elements
